Castle templarThe definitive institutionalisation of the spa comes about thanks to the enthusiastic and persistent spirit of Dr. José Gardete Martins (1869-1957) who, facing numerous difficulties and misunderstandings, dedicated all his life to the cause of therapeutical use of Fonte Santa’s waters.

The granting of a permit exploration concession of the thermal aquiferous took place on the 9th of January 1907 and was inaugurated in 1940.

Fonte Santa de Monfortinho’s waters are hipomineralized, bicarbonated, sodic, calcic and magnesic, having one of the highest contents of silica of the portuguese thermal waters. The temperature at the spring is of 30,5ºC. The water presents a pH of 5.45. The river’s volume reaches 25 l/second.

Dermatological affections, functional colonopathies, hepato-biliaire diseases and some gynecological chronicle situations are among the main groups of treated pathologies. The therapeutical modalities include ingestion of thermal water, baths in flowing water, hydromassage, showers (local, underwater, scottish, Vichy and circular), sprayings and  enteroclysis.
