Disabled people complain about the cars in the sidewalks

Braga still presents, in their secular streets, many obstacles to people with reduced mobility. This situation is growing worse owing to the constraints provoked by the drivers that abusively park over the sidewalks. The Portuguese Association of Disabled People points out precisely for the “lack of sensibility of the drivers” and for the “lack of knowledge” that causes the “depreciation of the differences”.

This Association analyses every case and tries to affect the dwellers, the drivers and the authorities. Till now, the initiatives have taken effect, says Rosa Guimarães, but she criticizes the slowness in the law’s elaboration, in the fulfilment of the duties of citizenship and in the respect for the others.

Henceforth, the Portuguese Association of Disabled People will develop some sensitization actions.

The disabled workers are surplus values for the enterprises and the institutions

The owners secure that disabled people valorize the enterprises and the institutions and do not break the productivity. Silvex employs 11 disabled workers that knew how to catch the opportunity without any State support.

Silvex is an enterprise of plastics and papers, in Benavente, that gives the opportunity to disabled people to show their value. José Pinheiro, 47 years old, is blind, and works for this institution. He lived in Barreiro and when one colleague told him about the opportunity to work for Silvex, he did not hesitate. He was 34 years old and no chances to work. He travelled to Ribatejo with his sweetheart, and today they both work for Silvex.

The director, Hernâni Magalhães, faces with naturalness the existence of a significative number of disabled people in the enterprise. He asserts that the productivity was never affected by his choice. Rather the contrary. He says that there are no disadvantages of hiring disabled people, and he thinks about hiring much more. It all started 20 years ago, when a young disabled woman asked him for job. He accepted and has never regretted his decision. Hernâni Magalhães works with blind people, people with locomotion problems and so on
